(#3) I'm thankful for old friends

It's such a blessing to have people around you that have known you for years, who, despite knowing about your less picturesque qualities, receive you into their company and confidence. Some of us at times have not even found our own company desirable, and to have someone else invite us in is almost unthinkable. But it happens because that's the way God is, and his people are a visible extension of his gracious love. We truly appreciate the people who do this even though they are known for holiness and godly living. It does not mean so much that a profligate person invites another person just like himself into his home. But when a true Christian asks a true sinner to visit and share in the warmth of a righteous home, that is a beautiful picture of God's extension of his own righteousness to us through Christ Jesus.

Honduras 02/08

This is my first blog post from Honduras. The Powers Ferry Road Church of Christ has agreed to support me to live and work with Daniel Mejivar and his family here in San Pedro Sula/ Quimistan for 3 months, from February 1-the end of April. Last week was very busy. My flight arrived at the SPS airport late Monday night (so late in fact, Daniel and his daughter Michelle thought they had missed me). Tuesday and Wednesday were spent taking care of some errands and being shown the ropes around here. Wednesday night we visited our sisters Paquita and Mariita. Paquita´s son is suffering from serious mental problems and she must provide constant care for him, which requires her to miss worship frequently, a fact she regrets. Thankfully she was able to visit the church in Quimistan this past Sunday. Thursday we headed to Quimistan. Every week, we will be living in the Mejivars´ actual home, in San Pedro Sula, Sunday evening-Thursday morning, and we will be staying in a rented house in Quimi

Does culture affect the application of 1 Corinthians 11:2-16?

For most commentators, the answer is an emphatic “Yes! Thiselton (2000) quotes Rousselle (“Body Politics in Ancient Rome”), “A veil or hood constituted a warning: it signified that the wearer was a respectable woman and that no man dare approach her,” i.e., as one potentially or actually sexually “available”. Thiselton later draws what he sees as an application: “To employ a dress code which hints at sexual availability while leading worship is unthinkable.” While that certainly is “unthinkable”, so is a woman leading the worship of the church, regardless of her wardrobe (14:34-38). Despite spending 48 pages commenting on this section of Scripture, Thiselton does not cite a single primary source to confirm his assertions about the covering in Corinthian culture. Country Music

This afternoon I spent an hour reading the lyrics to what are currently the 40 most popular country songs. I then tried to objectively analyze them for moral content (really, the lack thereof) and compiled the data with Excel. After doing it myself, I would not recommend that anyone else waste their time in the same way! I really like country music, as a style. I like the sound of acoustic guitars and lyrics sung in the dialect I grew up hearing and speaking. I like the way the male singers rarely try to show off their voice by climbing into the upper registers, which allows me to belt it out in the same octave (contra Boston, Michael Jackson, One Direction, et al. (sorry to anyone offended by those being classed together)). Country music just feels good and makes me feel at home. I think a lot of people, especially in the South, feel the same way.
