(#18) I'm thankful for Jordan Peterson

Last year a highly-credentialed psychologist/professor at the University of Toronto popped into the social scene after publicly decrying a piece of Canadian legislation intending to make illegal the use of certain pronouns in certain contexts. His name is Jordan Peterson. I've since grown to appreciate and be thankful for the way he is able to elucidate profound cultural subjects.

I'm generally grateful for people who are able to talk reasonably and logically about difficult and divisive issues. It is sad to see the deep fissures that segment our nation and every nation. This is a divided world but there are some people who genuinely want to create positive change.

I'll probably post more about Dr. Peterson in a future entry.

Honduras 02/08

This is my first blog post from Honduras. The Powers Ferry Road Church of Christ has agreed to support me to live and work with Daniel Mejivar and his family here in San Pedro Sula/ Quimistan for 3 months, from February 1-the end of April. Last week was very busy. My flight arrived at the SPS airport late Monday night (so late in fact, Daniel and his daughter Michelle thought they had missed me). Tuesday and Wednesday were spent taking care of some errands and being shown the ropes around here. Wednesday night we visited our sisters Paquita and Mariita. Paquita´s son is suffering from serious mental problems and she must provide constant care for him, which requires her to miss worship frequently, a fact she regrets. Does culture affect the application of 1 Corinthians 11:2-16?

For most commentators, the answer is an emphatic “Yes! Thiselton (2000) quotes Rousselle (“Body Politics in Ancient Rome”), “A veil or hood constituted a warning: it signified that the wearer was a respectable woman and that no man dare approach her,” i.e., as one potentially or actually sexually “available”. Thiselton later draws what he sees as an application: “To employ a dress code which hints at sexual availability while leading worship is unthinkable.” While that certainly is “unthinkable”, so is a woman leading the worship of the church, regardless of her wardrobe (14:34-38). Despite spending 48 pages commenting on this section of Scripture, Thiselton does not cite a single primary source to confirm his assertions about the covering in Corinthian culture. (#4) I'm thankful for Jeremiah's "Lamentations"

"Lamentations" may not be a title that was ever bound for the NYT's best seller list, but it should at least be in every Christian's top 66 picks, not only because it is inspired by God but also for the following reason: it demonstrates in dramatic fashion the terrifying consequences of sin, making this book one of the strongest deterrents to falling away from the Lord. Few other books of the Bible describe in more horrific detail what happens to people who turn away from God. Jeremiah saw the nation of Judah, and in particular Jerusalem, descend into a hellish nightmare where people traded their most precious possessions for a meal (1:11), where children died in their mothers' laps as they asked for food (2:11-12), where some women even ate their own children (2:20), presumably after they died of starvation, where religious leaders had nothing to offer (2:9), where wise and experienced people had no idea what to say (2:10), where the best and the brightest were
